International Peace Day

What, Why, Where, When, How?
In 1981, the United Nations proclaimed the third Tuesday of September as an International Day of Peace, and it was requested that it shall be devoted to commemorating and strengthening the ideals of peace both within and among all nations and peoples.
Peace One Day is a movement formed in 1999 by British director Jeremy Gilley as a film project to publicise and implement an international ceasefire day on one fixed date every year. His idea was as an adaptation to the already existing International Day of Peace, established by the United Nations in 1981. He put all his energy during two years in order to gain active support from all sectors of society, from governments, from individuals, from famous personalities, etc.
In 2002, it was decided to set the UN International Day of Peace on a fixed date, the 21st of September, and all member states, organisations of the United Nations system, regional and non-governmental organisations and individuals are supposed to commemorate, in an appropriate manner, the International Day of Peace. (UN declaration on Peace One Day)
Since then, the International Peace Day was promoted in CISV a lot and hundredth of activities have taken place in CISV chapters all over the world. Activities have reached from distributing fliers, lighting candles to public showings of the Peace One Day movie and Peace Day Music festivals.
In 2009, starting from the idea that the Junior Branch is a global movement, efforts all over the world were put together to create The Human Arrows Project which proved that the Junior Branch is indeed an international global movement.
With CISV participating in this global event, we will not only help promoting the UN International Day of Peace, but it also work towards CISV’s strategic objectives:
- Strengthen our relationships with UNESCO:
- Work with National UNESCO Branches
- Promote a UN recognized day
- Promote CISV:
- Externally through media coverage
- To other organizations we’re working with
- Increase cooperation with other like-minded organisations
So if...

What Are WE Going To Do This Year?
"Peace One Day, supported by puma.peace, has created One Day One Goal, a campaign to see football/soccer matches played in every country on Peace Day. 2009 saw over 700 matches in 200 countries. All you need is a ball and a patch of land."
It's simple. Find a patch of land that is flat enough to play football/soccer matches on. Find a ball that is round enough to play football soccer/matches with. Find a bunch of people passionate about peace enough to play a football/soccer match. Find someone to shoot it. And just play for peace!
