About Our JB!

Want to get to know us better? Here are a few questions, posed by the committee organizing IJBC (International Junior Branch Conference) this year, that we have answered about our own Junior Branch, in order to let you get to know us better!

Q: If you were in a karaoke, and had to pick a song that describes your JB - which one would it be?

A: Hmmm... Now that's a tough one. Well, let me think... I think our JB is in a process of rebirth right now, with a mostly new Executive and a lot of brand-new JBers. We have been having some tough times in the past year, with a lot of our experienced Executive leaving and having to rebuild again, and with support for our activities dwindling... but we seem to have crossed these hurdles together; as a team, we have weathered the storm and made it through to sunny seas. Our activities have beacome fresh and new, our JBers are excited to come back for more, and we are full of fresh new ideas and support - after a mini camp with over 60 participants, who could argue with that?

So, about the song... To be honest, the whole "rebirth" idea makes me think of the song "Tomorrow", from the musical "Annie", but that still doesn't really embody what I'm trying to say... how about "Lean On Me" (we all know that one!), which sort of talks about our teamwork with getting through the rough patches in our JB...? No? Hmmm...

Stuart has suggested the song, "We're All in this Together", from High School Musical (which I, by the way, think is rather lame and not a very original movie...), and even though he was half-joking, it sort of makes sense. Our JB is really quite close, somewhat like a big family, especially after the incredible bonding experiences everyone had at our last mini camp...

So, we have a couple ideas, bet we'll need to get back to you with a final answer... Next question, please!

Q: What things you do to make sure your JB keeps improving?

A: Aaah, this one is easier to answer. One of the things we do to help our JB improve is to always get our participants' thoughts on our activities. After every individual activity, we do some sort of evaluation (ex. Fist of Five) to find out how our JBers enjoyed the game, and we also try to do a full-event evaluation for all of our big events such as mini camps. This helps us to understand what our JBers liked and didn't like about our activities, which helps us to improve in our planning for future ones.

Another thing we are trying to do is to keep our ideas FRESH! We realized after a while that we couldn't just keep using the same old activities from the Gamebook every year... and so we have managed to bring in a whole bunch of new activities (from online, from other events, and from our own heads) to keep our events new, exciting, and more beneficial to our participants.

Q: If your JB was a boat, who would be the captain? And why is that?

a) Jack Sparrow

b) Captain Hook

c) the one from titanic (not Celine Dion)

d) none of the above, loser.

A: Wow... We're really being forced to think, here! Here's what I think:

- Not Captain Hook, because he's evil... and we're not...

- Not the one from Titanic, because I don't even remember him from the movie! The captain of our boat is not someone who you can easily forget!

- I'm going to rule out "d", because a) I am not a loser, and b) it's more fun just to come up with a rationale for one of the remaining choices!

- And that leaves us with only one choice: Jack Sparrow! Now, Jack is an excellent choice for a metaphorical Captain of our JB Ship, and the first reason is simply that he is a rather lovable guy, and so is our Exec! I mean, who can't like Jack?? Secondly, while he may seem rather unorganized and "go-with-the-flow", he always manages to make things work out. While there are times for our JB when things don't go exactly to plan, we always manage to make everything work out just right.

Although none of us have dreadlocks or a goatee with beads and lovely dangly things, and we are not drunken and sometimes untrustworthy and prone to exaggerating stories, there are some characteristics that we share with Captain Jack, and that's just the way we like it!

Q: Which was the last revolution your JB has seen?

A: To go back again, to the idea of "rebirth"... we are in the midst of a revolution right now! Imagine JB Waterloo as a cyclist, pedalling down a hilly road. In the beginning, after we had come over the crest of the original hill, it was smooth sailing down the slope. Then, as our Executive left to University and College, we were suddenly left at the bottom of a menacing hill. It was a challenge, let me tell you, and it took a while to make it up the hill. We have had some difficult times along the way - popped tires, inconsiderate drivers that almost ran us over... but we made it. Oh yes, we made it. We are now only beginning to come over the top of this new hill, slowly but surely picking up speed and enthusiasm as we go. Things can only get easier from here, and as our JB is reborn and rebuilt, it will become bigger and better than ever before. This is our revolution!

Q: Which movie you think would push your JB forward?

A: Well, this is a rather difficult one, as there are tons of inspirational movies out there, and it would be hard to find one specific to our JB... so I would like to fall back on an old favourite of mine, "Pay it Forward". This film shows us that even the smallest person can change the course of the future, and it is a very empowering movie that our JB should really get to see sometime.

Q: If your JB would pick a cause to protest about, which would it be?

A: I have the urge to answer this question with a rather silly answer... and so I will. You see, a few of us on Exec had a plan a while back to run a Free Hugs capaign in the mall nearby. Unfortunately, when we called to make sure that it was all right, we were told that they "do not support this type of thing." Of course we respected their wishes and the plan was called off, but it was a rather discouraging answer to hear. They don't support it?? I mean, it was a completely peaceful demonstration of spreading the love. We weren't asking for money, we weren't looking for anything in return: all we wanted to do was to go out into the community and show people that we care.

It is rather frusterating, to have ideas about ways you can change the world in your very own community, and then to have them tangled up in so many formalities that they eventually are abandoned. The fact that we live in a world where a simple act of kindness is such a complicated thing makes me rather sad. What I'm saying is that our JB would probably like to protest not being able to protest - that is, to protest against the barriers in our society that make community-beneficial projects so difficult to see through. If the formalities of forms and permission and all that were removed, imagine how easy it would be to just go out and change the world!

Now that you know about our JB in general, why don't you get to know the individual members of our Executive? Click on their pages above to see who is running Waterloo's JB activities and what their thoughts are on this wonderful organization!
