Why Conflict Resolution and Peace Education?

The IJB theme was chosen with several different ideas in mind. Firstly, that conflict (and its potential and possible resolution) is an issue that is central to the ideas and philosophy of CISV, although in practice is very rarely directly addressed within the organization, its programs and activities.

Secondly, Peace Education is the central pillar in the educational content of the organization, and again is touched very little in comparison to the potential it holds as a topic of discussion and learning. As the educational content of CISV becomes increasingly important to all members, understanding the distinction of peace education becomes an even more relevant task.

Turning Our Model Upside Down

CISV is based on experiential education, meaning that the vast majority of our activities and programs are founded on the experiences and feelings of their participants. From this basis, participants draw conclusions and, hopefully, take actions, as can be seen in the experiential education cycle. This process is used as a foundation for broader, more factual knowledge. Using the IJB theme over the next two years we would like to INVERT this model and make factual knowledge the basis of our experiences, thus lowering the amount of mis-information that possibly occurs when groups of participants experience something together in an isolated incident and then decide that their one group experience is fact. We believe that by providing this new and exciting foundation, the quality of all of our experiential learning moments will increase.
