First post !

Published July 23, 2009 Day -8 , What we think 0 Comments

Hi juniors of the world !

This is the first post on the IJBC 09 Live Blog.

This blog is a tool to help every junior, physically present in Antigua or not, to take part to IJBC 09, at least to be informed about what’s going on.

As we have done that before, it's gonna rock your world, as said above. But please, feel free to use the discussion page to add any comment or suggestion you may have. We'll be thrilled to include it in the blog.

We will start it using the poll that has been made last year and will consider the feedback we received from juniors all over the world regarding this page.

Anyway, welcome here, and stay tuned !

The "Blog Team".

Explanations regarding the IJBC Live Page

Soon to come, the explainations in relation with the colors and the threads that will be covered at IJBC.

Hi everyone and Welcome on the IJBC Live page on JBPedia.

IJBC stands for International Junior Branch Conference. We are actually 75 people from more than 30 different countries gathered in la Antigua, Guatemala. We will be working here from the 31st of July until the 4th of August.

You will be able to find on this page the schedule of the conference, part of the content of the sessions we will attend and other information related to this meeting. It will also be the place where we will elect one of the two candidates to become the next IJR : Juanma and Rou.

This year IJBC has been designed in a brand new way. The meeting has been thought both by the current IJRs + candidates and the IJB Committee who is in charge of several sessions happening during the meeting. You will be able to see those different threads of the panning by the difference of colours on the schedule. This year, the meeting is composed of 5 main threads :

  1. Global Training Strategy
  2. LMOs
  3. Decentralization
  4. Theme 2010
  5. Out of body experience

Day 2

Working with LMOs in theory

Main goal: Make the participants to think about possible partners for Junior Branch and concrete projects we could work with them.

How we got there: This was a session full of brainstorming.

First we had to think the reasons why Junior Branch wants to work with LMOs:

  • Help us reach our goals
  • Increases quality of our content
  • Creates diverse kinds of opportunities for involvement
  • Funding
  • Knowledge sharing
  • ...

After that, Alex and Camilla asked us to say what we, as individuals, care about. We had all sorts of answers, such as education, environment, freedom of speech, social inclusion, engagement and good food.

Then, IJB Team presented us 10 international organizations that have similar missions and goals to JB ones. We were asked to choose between them according to our personal interests. The groups had to brainstorm ideas of how Junior Branch could work with these LMOs and then develop the one they like the most. The organizations and the ideas chosen were:

  • AIESEC:enables young people to explore and develop their leadership potential for them to have a positive impact in society.
  • OXFAM:they work directly with communities and seek to influence the powerful to ensure that poor people can improve their lives and livelihoods and have a say in decisions that affect them.
  • AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL:a worldwide movement of people who campaign for internationally recognized human rights for all.
  • UNESCO: National summer camp with minority groups delegations with UNESCO members as staff.
  • HOSTELLING INTERNATIONAL: City tours with educational content for the hostel's guests.
  • HABITAT FOR HUMANITY:
  • GREENPEACE:
  • RIGHT TO PLAY:an international humanitarian organization that uses sport and play programs to improve health, develop life skills, and foster peace for children and communities in some of the most disadvantaged areas of the world.
  • TRASCEND INTERNATIONAL:connects autonomous individuals and centers working on peace by peaceful means, development by developmental means and environment by environmental means.'
  • WWF:

Insider's: "I thought it was really good because a lot of times they talk about how we should work with LMOs but don't say how we should do that. And this session we actually learned how to work with LMOs and we heard about LMOs we never heard about." Angela Gomez - Phillipines

Day 3

Exploring and questionning power relations

Main goal: Understanding the different kinds of power relations and making a self-evaluation about how centralize the decision-making is in our own JBs.

How we got there: Paul and Juanma started the session by showing us some movies - from High School Musical to Simpsons with a special mention to Pac Man - that had evident situations of power relations. Then, we had to discuss about them and compare them with the decision-making processes of our JBs.

After that, we were divided between small, medium and big JBs and Juanma and Paul asked us to tell the group 3 decision-making situations that happen in our JBs and how centralize they are. We were also asked to tell if there was any of these situations that we wanted to make them either more centralized or more descentralized.

We got then to 2 big groups and we discussed about the cases we shared.

Insider's: "One of the things I most liked was that they divided us by the size of our NAs so we could talk with other JBs that have similar problems than us. And it is interesting to see that we all want to decentralize and that it is already being done by the IJRs and IJB Team during this meeting and also by the participants with their feedback during the zoom out sessions." Francisco Pavão - Portugal

Pre match

The most expected match ever! Every football expert has a strong opinion about both teams chances to win what is about to be the biggest sport event in JB history.

  • "ROWW is on fire!" Beckenbauer
  • "Even with the bad result last World Cup, the technique of BOCCA Juniors is superior." Ronaldo
  • "The distraction strategies of ROWW were very effective last year and they have been creating new ways of making BOCCA playes to loose their focus. I heard they involve caipirinhas and reggaeton." David Beckham
  • "Football? Oh, you mean soccer!" Barack Obama

Are you ready???

Match results

Woooooooooooow! What a match! BOCCA Juniors fought like titans but it wasn't enough against ROWW's efficient defense. Final score: ROWW 4 x BOCCA 3.

Best moments:

  • ROWW's Midfield Girls' Committee brainstorming about what should their strategic planning.
  • That same Committee adapting the Free Hugs activity as a powerful strategy to stop BOCCA's guys.
  • BT's amazing goal with his head.
  • The 30 minutes extra time the Home Staff gave as an attempt to give a chance to BOCCA to change the result.
  • Jose Villegas' "Freeze for Peace" after being hit in the stomache by the ball.
  • Pia's random noises during the match.
  • Making fun of the Brazilian guys after the match.
